Monsters vs. Aliens Online Review

What horror/sci-fi fan wouldn't want to see a film called Monsters vs Aliens? The title itself suggests a humorous take on the 50's alien invasion and monster movies that have a place in the hearts of many. With the title that it has, you know exactly what you should expect. An animated film with monsters fighting aliens. This movie pretends to be nothing more than it is from the outset and that's something that's admirable. It just wants to be an entertaining film for kids and adults alike. In that regard, it succeeds.

The movie begins with Susan Murphy(Witherspoon) preparing for her big wedding to a weatherman. Unfortunately, a giant meteorite falls on her and irradiates her body. She grows to be fifty feet tall with silver hair and that puts a damper on the ceremony. Soon after she's captured by the government and placed in a prison with the other monsters in this picture: Dr. Cockroach (Laurie), Insectasaurus, The Missing Link(Arnett) and a gelatinous ooze named B.O.B(Rogen). At around the same time, an alien decides to invade Earth to get a rare source of power, and the President (Colbert) decides to give the monsters freedom if they fight the aliens.

That's pretty much all of the plot you need going into this film. That's all given to you in the first half-hour, and the rest of the film is the monsters fighting the aliens, as well as interacting with normal people. Susan desperately tries to get her old life back only to discover she likes her new friends. The others are offended that they are mistreated even as they help the city. However these plot points are really glossed over in favor of more action set pieces and comedy. That's one of the big problems is that it brings up what could be an interesting story point and dismisses it fairly quickly.

Another problem would be the use of 3D. While in the beginning it's fairly prevalent and brings the viewer into the movie, it doesn't' become used as much later on. While the movie looks a lot better with the general effect, none of the usual gags come into play. While some would look at this as a good thing, and that the film didn't rely on a gimmick, I didn't. After all, it was advertised to be in 3D, and that's what I paid for. So when the use of it becomes less frequent as the movie continues, it's a matter of not getting what I pay for.

However, the movie does deliver on it's premise and title. You do get to see monsters fight aliens, early and often. The action sequences, while they don't take full advantage of the 3D, are still exciting. It's a nice moment to see the monsters interact and use their abilities to save the day from the giant robot. However, it's the comedy that leaves the lasting impact in this film. The star of the film, by far, is B.O.B. Seth Rogen brings a charm and level of comedy to the role that requires no raunchy jokes or pop culture references, thus already proving he's above the roles he's getting typecast in.

The other voice actors all did their part, each brought their own value to the film. I especially loved the small role from Stephen Colbert, playing the President (perhaps a nod to his failed "campaign"?). There are also voice cameos from Amy Poehler and Renee Zellweger. I won't give away when or where but you should be able to pick them out. There are also little references to the old 50's sci-fi movies that I loved. Obviously there are the main ones like the monsters themselves, but I also liked the multiple references to other films that were subtly thrown in. This may require more than one viewing just to catch them all.
